Names of Oscar winning movies: Lithuania re-established its independence in 1990 after nearly 50 years of occupation by the Soviet Union. It wasn’t until 2006 that Lithuania began to submit entries for Academy Award consideration in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Lithuania has yet to win an Oscar.

Names of the most famous directors: Lithuanian born filmmakers have earned international reputations such as Arunas Matelis who was awarded the Directors Guild of America Best Documentary Filmmaker award in 2007 for “Before Flying Back to Earth” and Jonas Mekas who has often been called “the godfather of American avantgarde cinema”. Directors who are of Lithuanian descent and have won Academy Awards for Best Director include Robert Zemeckis (1994 Forrest Gump) and Michel Hazanavicius (2011 The Artist).
